« back to classes page
Learn to find your way to various checkpoints with the aid of a map and compass. Orienteering truly is a sport for everyone. Some courses are on paved paths, and some are on more rugged terrain, all the way to bushwhacking courses. Learning to read a map with a compass is also a fun skill to learn. You'll join instructor Matt Plutz in the classroom for some basic introductions to map and compass reading. Then you'll have a chance to practice your newly acquired skills on a field course at Lake of the Woods in Mahomet, Illinois.

Activity level: Plan to walk 3 to 4 miles for the field portion of the class. Much of this will be on uneven ground. To best prepare, wear comfortable shoes and pants because you may walk through some areas of tall grass. Bring a water bottle.
